Dr Richard Yap
Senior Resident Physician

For over 15 years, Dr Richard Yap has been a cornerstone of HCA Hospice, dedicating himself to providing the best palliative care for each patient. Dr Richard has witnessed the evolution of HCA firsthand when he started his journey with HCA in the Star PALS (Paediatric Advanced Life Support) programme, moving on to home care, and eventually to the day hospice where he currently serves.

"Palliative care is now part of the healthcare journey and is no longer a taboo subject. In the 15 years that I have been with HCA Hospice, I've also witnessed how we have been able to help more patients and their families," he reflects.

He is a passionate advocate for day hospice services, encouraging patients and families to utilize them where possible. "Having patients come in allows us to serve them and their families better and with more creative and holistic services," he explains.

Recognising the realities of palliative care, Dr Richard embodies the philosophy of "Cure sometimes, relieve often, comfort always". These words of wisdom by a 19th century physician, Edward Livingston Trudeau, guides his daily life, work and interactions with patients.

As HCA celebrates its 35th anniversary, Dr Richard continues to inspire and lead by example as he has from the beginning. Demonstrating unwavering dedication to his patients and their families, his passion for palliative care not only provides comfort to those in need but also shapes the future of hospice care, ensuring that each journey's end is met with dignity.

"Cure sometimes, relieve often, comfort always."
