Nur Hamizah
Assistant Nurse Manager

Nine years ago, after her father was diagnosed with cancer, former Intensive Care Unit nurse Hamizah made a personal decision to switch to palliative care. Since then, she hasn't looked back, finding a sense of purpose and growth in her career that go beyond clinical expertise.

"As a palliative care nurse, I have learned to be a better communicator and manager," Hamizah shares. "It has taught me to be more independent, relying on and expanding my skills and knowledge to better treat and care for my patients."

For Hamizah, supporting patients through their final journey has been incredibly rewarding. "Helping patients feel more at ease allows for a more dignified passing. It also helps their families cope with their emotions better," she explains.

After eight years serving in HCA's home care programme, Hamizah made the shift to being a day care nurse at Oasis@Outram last year. She appreciates Oasis@Outram's 3D model of care that emphasises Dignity, Diversity and Development — providing a rich variety of community-led activities and amenities which motivates and supports patients in having a greater hand in planning their days.

As HCA Hospice celebrates its 35th anniversary, Hamizah recognises the positive growth she has seen in the sector and organisation. There has been more support with social workers for the patients and families, a growing team that supports each other to help patients and their caregivers, and innovative ideas being put into practice. It's a nurturing environment, not just for patients, but for the staff as well.

"My wish is that we continue to provide this wonderful care for patients and their families," Hamizah says with hope. "That we will continue to do our best, and be the best."

"Helping patients feel more at ease allows for a more dignified passing. It also helps their families cope with their emotions better."
